Liatris spicata, Gayfeather Seed Balls

  • 1450

A showy US native perennial wildflower, it has an upright habit and is between 18" and 30" tall with long purple and occasionally white spikes of flowers that bloom through the middle and late summer. It's a favorite of bees and butterflies. It grows a bulb-like root, which can divide, but also reproduces by seed. Finches are particularly fond of the abundant seeds.

Liatris seeds have a have a tough seed coat. Your seed balls will germinate optimally if planted in the fall. We will offer pre-stratified seed balls in February.

First year plants look like a single blade of grass. Second year plants appear like a green bottle brush. It is in the third year that the purple spikes appear!

It is a facultative wetland species, but does well in rich upland positions.

A note about seed balls:
Seed balls, also known as seed bombs, protect the seeds from erosion, foraging, and many other factors. This protective property often results in a slower germination cycle. Wildflowers are also highly variable in their germination rates. Please be patient with your seed balls. If you placed them in a suitable location, soil, and climate, when the seeds are ready, they will grow!
