Silphium laciniatum, Compass Plant Seed Balls

  • 1950

Seed Balls for this plant are in stock! You can purchase, but the page is still under construction

A large and stunning US native perennial, this plant has  4" golden yellow sun-flower blooms that attract bees and butterflies. This unique wildflower has large flat leaves orienting themselves along a North-South axis. This minimizes the parching heat of the mid-day sun. Compass plant can reach 12-feet in height, though is usually closer to 5-feet. Be patient with this plant, as it will only produce little green foliage in the first two years. Blooms appear in the third year.

These seed balls are somewhat more expensive due to the scarcity of the seed and the special handling these large seeds and seed balls require.

A note about seed balls:
Seed balls, also known as seed bombs, protect the seeds from erosion, foraging, and many other factors. This protective property often results in a slower germination cycle. Wildflowers are also highly variable in their germination rates. Please be patient with your seed balls. If you placed them in a suitable location, soil, and climate, when the seeds are ready, they will grow!
